RESET Combat operations is all about controlled chaos, but even at the most elite levels, that chaos can become overwhelming. When things on the battlefield start to go sideways we fall back to the simplest fix – a RESET. A reset is an all stop. It’s a strategic call to take a moment to quickly PAUSE, take a BREATH, and to gets all sled dogs pulling in the same direction. The current season is exciting to say the least. Between the political climate, tending to a pandemic, agonizing over holiday finances, and everything else the universe is throwing at us, life’s been an emotional roller coaster. It’s during these times of stress and uncertainty that we need to take a moment to RESET and regain the control. Here are some common tools high performers share to keep control and maximize results when the wheels seem to be coming off. PAUSE – Make a RESET call. Don’t react immediately to a trigger! Step back, take a breath, and gain some clarity. EMOTIONAL REGULATION – Know your sweet spot! Like warning lights on a dashboard, some emotional signals are critical while others are more stable. Emotional Regulation is about identifying what your current emotional state is as well as where you desire to be. From here, you can then PRIME yourself or CALM yourself depending on your needs. FRONT SIGHT FOCUS – This is about goal setting. When target shooting, if you focus on the target, you’ll miss the mark, but if you focus on the front sight, you’ll nail it. The target is the outcome goal, but to get there, you need to focus on the process goal – the sights. Don’t focus on the outcome, focus on what you need to do to get there. INNER MONOLOGUE – Yep…talk to yourself! The body does what the mind tells it to do. That’s because performance follows focus, so if you talk through what you want to achieve your mind will take over. This is also the key to changing a negative belief system with a thought replacement. Once something is said, it takes on its own life. Why else do people utter “Knock on wood?” It’s not magic, it’s thought replacement! An emotion is nothing more than the body’s response to a NEED. If the need is met, we have a good emotional response. If not, things like HANGRY become a thing. Whether it’s a personal or professional struggle, utilizing the tools above helps take back control, builds clarity, and allows you to control your situations, not the other way around. Remember, the world needs HITTERS! |
