EXFILTRATION

01 December 2020

While serving as a SEAL on combat operations, the actual missions was never frightening, but there were two times during every mission that was terrifying – ENTERING (Infiltrating) and EXITING (Exfiltrating) a combat zone.

We plan and prepare in agonizing details for the mission objective, so WE typically own the TARGET SPACE, but on the way IN or OUT of that space, anything can happen! This is why SEALs concentrate so much attention on contingency training prior to deployments. In the small numbers we operate in, our ability to adapt and make decisions as a team under duress is the secret to our survival.

As we round the corner this week and enter our final month of 2020, we are on our proverbial exfiltration. We made it this far, but we are far from out of the woods! It’s time to make a critical assessment of your situation. Here are three questions we continuously assess throughout an operation:
▪ What were your GOALS? Goals are great guides, but they often change due to unforeseen circumstances or situations. Stay flexible!
▪ What is your actual situation? You might not be where you want, or where you expected. That’s normal, but don’t let it discourage or deter you. Stay the long course – It’s a marathon not a sprint.
▪ What ADJUSTMENTS need to be made? This is about keeping the tactical advantage. Identify the things that are working, eliminate the things that aren’t, and go with the flow.
MOST IMPORTANTLY – Don’t go it alone. Use your team! Whether this is a personal or professional situation, there’s ALWAYS strength in numbers. Adjust and defy the status quo! Remember, the world needs HITTERS!
Quote of the Day “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” – Jimmy Dean
